Melbourne’s Dirty Three are a formidably accomplished instrumental trio led by frequent Nick Cave collaborator Mick Ellis. Their romantic, often heavily improvisational music can vacillate between pacific calm and stormy catharsis within a single song, giving them a striking emotional immediacy that has been imitated by a host of instrumental post-rock acts throughout the ‘90s and ‘00s. Toward the Low Sun finds the group reconvening after a seven-year hiatus with a solid and rewarding collection of songs that represent a confident return to form. Toward the Low Sun is filled with tempestuous long-form jams; their openhearted romanticism deliberately recalls the explosive power of classic Dirty Three albums like Horse Stories and Whatever You Love You Are. If Toward the Low Sun never quite reaches the dizzying heights of those earlier works, it nonetheless has moments of considerable power and originality.
