Love Scenes continues with the same instrumentation (and popular acclaim) as Krall's Nat "King" Cole tribute All for You, her previous breakthrough album from 1996. Here, the Nanaimo, B.C., native employs the classic Cole trio format, both singing and playing piano herself. Formidable guitarist Russell Malone returns, with first-call double bassist Christian McBride aboard for these sessions. With a wider selection of songs at her disposal, Krall performs ones that she’s since made her own: a concert favorite, Dave Frishberg’s “Peel Me a Grape” (with Malone’s now-trademark guitar effect after the "Pop me a cork” line) was once the late Blossom Dearie’s, but it's now co-owned by the two. “I Don't Know Enough About You” and “You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me” dazzlingly showcase all four interlocking instruments, while the artful restraint exercised on “Gentle Rain” is emotionally all-encompassing.
