[Edit]Like many American-bred death metal bands, Deteriorot frames their brutal sonic creations with historically minded lyrics about ancient cults and evil deities — a trend championed by black metal Egyptologists supreme Nile. Though not nearly as capable as the North Carolina combo, Deteriorot manages to hold their own with this decent, belated debut album (which actually combines most of their previous two EPs). Endowed with a roar of cavernous proportions, vocalist Paul Zavatela leads his evil minions through a series of alternately blazing and slowly grinding death metal diatribes. And while it doesn't possess the clearest of production values, In Ancient Beliefs does benefit from a colossal sound throughout, adding extra weight and evil intent to eloquently titled tracks like "Unholy Return," "Vile Disfigurement," and "Endless Hauntings and Demons Despair."
