Arnaz burst onto the American music scene when Latin music was enjoying its first taste of success. A record like "Babalu" was viewed back then as primitive and exciting, and Desi's sex appeal and good looks made him the Ricky Martin of his day. He was virtually the only bandleader who had success after World War II, and his combination of highbrow and lowbrow with loads of charisma was irresistible. That this music still holds up well today says more for Desi's abilities than the current vogue for Latin music. Vocal showpieces like "Cuban Pete," "Holiday in Havana," "El Cumbanchero," and "Carnival in Rio" are offset by strong band instrumentals like "Peanut Vendor," Tico Tico," and "Brazil." Those only familiar with Arnaz from his stint on I Love Lucy are in for a major surprise at the high quality of music aboard this collection.
