Hailing from Detroit, Dennis Coffey was the one who first introduced the Wah-Wah pedal to Motown, and is prominently featured on gigantic hits from the Temptations ("Ball of Confusion"), Edwin Starr ("War"), and Freda Payne ("Band of Gold"), in addition to countless other records from Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic, and Stevie Wonder. While he continues to gig regularly at both small local clubs and major music festivals, this is his first solo album in many years, and it's well worth the wait. "7th Galaxy" kicks things off right away, a righteously funky instrumental anthem loaded with wild guitar riffs, bold horn arrangements, and layered percussion. Throwback soul singer Mayer Hawthorne graces the microphone on "All Your Goodies Are Gone," while other vocal features come from Lisa Kekaula on a great rendition of 100 Proof's "Somebody's Been Sleeping," and Mick Collins and Rachel Nagy take on the classic "I Bet You." All of the singers are great, but it's Dennis and his guitar that really shine here, and all of the instrumental cuts — especially "Knockabout," "Plutonious," "Ubiquitous" and "Android" are just awesome. Don't miss this one.
