If there's an heir to the classic bluegrass tradition of Bill Monroe, Del McCoury is surely the man. Since the '80s, he's been guiding his family band with talented sons Ronnie and Robbie at his side. McCoury's ability to capture bluegrass' "high and lonesome" sound is matched with a desire to add fresh colors and influences to his music. The appropriately titled Deeper Shade of Blue finds him tapping into the blues with impressive results. Del's keening vocals fill tracks such as "What Made Milwaukee Famous" and "If You've Got the Money Honey" with an almost mystical sense of longing and desolation. Among the McCoury original tunes, the album's title number and "The Bluest Man in Town" throb with purebred heartache. Ronnie's mandolin and Robbie's banjo are dazzling, augmented by fiddler Tad Marks's sure-handed runs. The McCoury clan make Deeper Shade of Blue resonate with virtuosity and spirit.
