World music was hardly a household phrase when David Bowie and Brian Eno released the third installment in their "Berlin trilogy." But Lodger offers track after catchy track of genre mixing and matching built around a survey of a planet where trouble is all but inescapable. The hilarious travelogue clichés of "Move On" mock the idea itself. "Yassassin (Turkish for Long Live)" deploys Middle Eastern strings atop new wave–ified reggae as Bowie limns the displacement of newly arrived urban immigrants. And Adrian Belew's wailing Fripp-like guitar pits urban noise against the tribalist beat of "Red Sails" while adding avant-screech to the stomping macho parody "Boys Keep Swinging." Even domestic scenes ("D.J.," "Repetition") feel charged with anything but safety on this, ultimately one of Bowie's most underappreciated works.
