[Edit]The 2012 double-disc release Magic Triangle/Leap of Faith combines two of trumpeter Dave Douglas' albums from 1998 and 2000, respectively. One of the leaders of the new jazz avant-garde that emerged in the '90s in New York City, Douglas has explored a wide-ranging and eclectic variety of jazz styles from Eastern European folk music-inflected projects to modern creative improvisation and more swinging, post-bop explorations. These albums feature his quartet of tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist James Genus, and drummer Ben Perowsky, and flow stylistically more toward the swinging, post-bop end of the spectrum. Primarily focused on Douglas' original compositions, these albums showcase his knack for muscular, inspired improvisation that walks the line between "in" and "out" playing, as well as his love of organic group interplay.
