If you're a clarinetist who plays traditional jazz, it’s impossible to escape the long shadows of Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, and Artie Shaw. Based on the his choice of material here—which, along with the title cut includes several other tunes from the Goodman repertoire and other clarinet classics—it would seem that Dave Bennett didn’t even try. Nonetheless, this isn’t an archival exercise. He's joined by pianist Tad Weed, bassist Paul Keller, and drummer Pete Siers, as well as guitarist Reg Schwager on most of the tracks. The music sounds modern in its approach and arrangements, as well as the soloing. Of the classics, “Sing Sing Sing” and “Begin the Beguine” both reveal some fresh ideas. Of particular note is the bossa nova–based revamp of the title track, which is only recognizable when Bennett occasionally runs through the melody. Those who want to hear if the clarinetist has the technical goods should look to the hard-charging “Running Wild,” which crackles with energy. A well-executed effort with lots to like for clarinet fans.
