A collection assembled for the Daptone label’s 2014 European summer tour, the Daptone Super Soul Revue features previously released tracks from the bands that will be part of that tour. Of course the Daptone folks know their soul music history, and this package tour no doubt references the legendary European tour that Stax did in 1967 with Otis Redding anchoring. Daptone has Sharon Jones ably filling that role, and not surprisingly, three songs from her catalog are included here. There are also two songs by Charles Bradley and, surprisingly, the little-known and rarely seen Sugarman Three. Things are rounded out by a track from Antibalas’ only album with the label, one from the newly emerging but classic soul–sounding Saun & Starr, and a bit of MC work from Dap-Kings guitarist Binky Griptite. For the uninitiated, this is a fine overview of label’s artists doing some of their best songs.
