[Edit]Coming out of South Carolina, Danny! (also known as Danny Swain) is a rapper/producer who's been steadily cranking out clever, down-to-earth hip-hop since his 2004 debut, The College Kicked-Out. After brief affiliations with both Interscope and Def Jux, he's recently found himself aligned with ?uestlove's Okayplayer empire. That label released Payback, his seventh solo album and the third edition in his recent concept rap trilogy (also including And I Love H.E.R. and Charm). Assisted by a motley crew of guests—Tanya Morgan, Agallah, El-P, Swizz Beatz, Lil B, Blu, DJ Kay Slay, Phonte, Amber Rose Tamblyn, and Res, among others—he gives us 17 tracks that address his always-unpredictable status in the industry while subtly paying tribute to a handful of '90s-era legends. Funny, thought-provoking, and unlike just about anything else out there, this is a truly enjoyable release from one of the most compelling artists working today.
