This is billed as the Michael Philip Mossman and Daniel Schnyder Quintet, with trumpeter Mossman taking the best of the solos and Schnyder contributing the compositions and arrangements. Mossman is in peak performance, his hard bop licks a revelation. He is capable of sustaining creative lines that punch powerfully toward a logical destination. Schnyder is a better writer than soloist, although his versatility as a horn man is a plus (he blows equally proficiently on flute and tenor and soprano saxes). Equally versed as a modern classical and jazz scribe, he often combines the two genres in his music, although his heart is with the latter. His tunes incorporate interesting twists and odd meters, although sometimes the intellectualism gets in the way. The Polish rhythm section led by pianist Wladislaw Sendeki is an easy match for the Americans.
