[Edit]Curtis Mayfield's work with the Impressions grew steadily more political through the '60s. Mayfield's quiet but firm stance on civil rights burst into flame on Curtis, his 1970 solo debut. From the first moments of the opening "Don't Worry (If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go)," this is a loving but sometimes angry album that takes the measure of America in a new decade. The music is still airy Chicago soul, but with a grittier flavor that comes to the fore on the lengthy, inspiring "Move On Up." Mayfield deals in plainspoken truths that take on the force of poetry; "The Other Side of Town" shares those qualities with his later Superfly. This edition pulls together a variety of demos and other odds and ends that help illuminate Mayfield's grand achievement.
