Minor '80s dancehall artist Courtney Melody originally released Modern Girl in 1989, and the collection was remastered for a 1998 CD release. Fans of reggae who are unfamiliar with Melody's smooth delivery might liken it most to the soulful, yearning pitch of Johnny Osborne. Which isn't to say that Melody can't muster up some sweet choruses of his own, which he does most notably on the disc's title cut. On this track and just about every other cut on Modern Girl, Melody delivers simple odes to the objects of his constant affection: the ladies whom he pines over with passion and vocal precision. Other standouts include "Down in the Dane Hall," "Just My Type of Girl," and the remixed title cut featuring performances by Heavy D and Brigadier Jerry. Throughout, producer Robert Ffrench keeps the island rhythms flowing with soft side sticks and a big bass. Completists interested in acquiring as many quality '80s dancehall favorites as possible would do well to add Modern Girl to their collection.
