Donald Lawrence begins right at the beginning on Law of Confession, as "The Word of the Lord" employs the opening line of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, "In the beginning was the word." From there, accompanied by his fervent choir, he addresses the needs and faith of a congregation with which he seems to be entirely in synch. The music ranges from traditional gospel to ‘60s and ‘70s soul and R&B (the ballad "Happy Being Me" sounds so much like a Stevie Wonder track it even has a characteristic Wonder-like chromatic harmonica part) as Lawrence anticipates the gospel slogans of the choir, either speaking or singing in a gruff voice. His message is timely. In "Word of My Power," he promises not only health, but also wealth, specifically, "debt cancellation." "Stop worrying about the economy," he tells his listeners, "the blessing is on you." Indeed, in the concluding "There Is a King in You," he preaches self-esteem and empowerment to his troubled congregation. "You come from royalty," he declares, which ought to help them with both their spiritual and economic concerns in 2009.
