Riding on releases for Sphere Records (Dark Soho) and Pinwheel (Nerve), Codex's debut for Nephilim went in a slightly different direction than most claiming allegiance to the psych-trance coalition. Amos Sharon, a self-taught producer based out of Tel Aviv, hammered an album together from bits and pieces of hard house, techno, and Goa. Unfortunately, while this might have been an appealing combination, Sharon was a sloppy self-editor and rarely restrained his ideas even as they breached the nine-minute mark. Stereoculture was a stern record and a promising new angle on Israeli trance, but too sustained to express its own mission statement.
