As the title indicates, this impressive box set comprises every song that Chuck Berry recorded for Chess Records in the ‘60s (he left the label in 1966 for a short stay on Mercury). What the title doesn’t tell you is that you get a whopping 108 songs, sequenced in chronological order. A few songs here include alternate mixes and versions. For instance, Berry’s 10th take on Bobby Troup’s “Route 66” is the highly influential version with his trademark guitar leads, while the 11th take swings more like a jump jive jazz rocker. It’s also neat to hear how Chuck and Martha Berry’s vocals on “Come On” have influenced Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’ harmonies. The real treat comes in the form of the October 1963 live concert recorded off the mixing board at Detroit’s Walled Lake Casino. Shortly before playing, Berry had been released from serving 20 months in prison for violating the Mann Act after transporting an underage Apache prostitute across state lines. Subsequently, his live performance here is especially fiery.
