Chubb Rock and Howie Tee were one of the most underrated rapper-producer teams of the '80s, and the breadth and length of 1989’s And the Winner Is testify to the fruitfulness of their partnership. “Bump the Floor,” “Blow the Whistle,” and “Mr. Nobody” are three of that era's roughest, toughest street rap songs, but Chubb wasn’t possessed by gangster posturing. Though gifted with a bullish voice, his favorite tactic was to disarm the listener of his expectations, either with musicality (“Same Old Thing”), alacrity (“Caught Up,” “Ya Bad Chubbs”), or understatement (“She’s with Someone”).
