Christopher Young's score to the little-remembered 1988 Vietnam war adventure BAT-21 artfully integrates contemporary Western orchestral sensibilities with traditional Asian instrumentation, employing Japanese shakunachi and nokan flutes alongside sweeping strings and driving percussion. Although previously known almost exclusively for his work in the horror genre, Young proves adept with more realistic action sequences, conveying the carnage of war via thundering rhythms and aggressive symphonics. More intimate passages like "Bonding" are no less impressive, revealing a beauty and elegance missing from the composer's more visceral efforts.
