Pianist Chris Donnelly's recording debut under his own name is an unusual session, as it is a solo session. But the young man is hardly overconfident by omitting a rhythm section or horns. Starting with his fleet, inventive interpretation of the legendary Bill Evans' "Very Early," Donnelly makes a strong case that he is an artist of great potential. His robust setting of Bud Powell's "Hallucinations" is a rollicking, straight-ahead rendition. Donnelly's variations on Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" — which is based on "(Back Home Again In) Indiana" — is a playful affair that keeps the listener guessing as to where the pianist is headed next. One of the surprises is his choice of two songs written for the 1950 animated feature Cinderella, revealing the lyrical possibilities of "So This Is Love" and "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," songs all but ignored by jazz musicians. Donnelly's originals also prove striking. His shimmering "Winter's Waltz" glistens like early-morning sunlight on new fallen snow. The spacious "Serenity" is an uplifting ballad that has the feeling of a requiem. Expect great things to follow Chris Donnelly's impressive debut CD.
