[Edit]On this hard-to-find collector's Lp, the extroverted tenor-saxophonist Charlie Ventura is heard on four sessions from 1946. Two dates team Ventura with swing clarinetist Barney Bigard while the other top sidemen include altoists Willie Smith and Charlie Kennedy, trumpeter Red Rodney (three years before he joined Charlie Parker), pianists Arnold Ross and Teddy Napoleon, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Red Callender and drummer Nick Fatool. The music is mostly small-group swing although one can feel the influence of bebop in spots. These spirited performances (all recorded in Los Angeles) have once again become rare due to the cutout status of this recommended Lp.
