For the Charlie Barnet entry in its Big Bands series, Time-Life Music has opted to license only the material Barnet recorded for RCA Victor's Bluebird label between 1939 and 1941. Though this was Barnet's most popular period, the set ignores his biggest hits, such as "Where Was I?" and "I Hear A Rhapsody," in favor of more jazz-flavored instrumentals, most of them emulating Count Basie or Duke Ellington. Barnet's theme song, "Cherokee," is included, of course, as well as two songs recorded with Lena Horne during her brief tenure with the band.
