This soul-stirring 1970 homage to The Beatles’ Abbey Road is a complete and loving Memphis reinterpretation of the album, down to the actual album jacket itself. The original song running order is rearranged into three medleys. Each packs an emotional wallop, which is remarkable considering it’s mostly vocal-free. Booker T.’s percolating Hammond organ sets the tone early on “Golden Slumbers,” and it’s expertly answered throughout by Steve Cropper’s arching psych/country/R&B guitar playing, Donald “Duck” Dunn’s effortless bass swing, and the drumming of Al Jackson Jr., who manages to add groove to these Beatles compositions.
