The soundtrack to the 1997 film Boogie Nights set a period-correct tone for a story about the rise of Southern California’s porn industry in the '70s and its fall in the early '80s. Since many songs were needed to score the 155-minute movie, a second soundtrack surfaced three months after the first volume. Comparatively, this one has a more cohesive flow. Following the libidinous funk of Three Dog Night’s “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” recalls the complicated relationships that developed among the story’s characters. The single version of Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing” and Charles Wright’s “Do Your Thing” are perfect examples of that magical time between disco’s embryonic stage and its overblown, overproduced Studio 54 era. “Driver’s Seat” by Sniff ‘n The Tears serves as a reminder that the ‘70s weren’t all about disco, while Rick Springfield’s power-pop hit “Jessie’s Girl” perfectly encapsulates the dawn of the ‘80s.
