Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie “Prince” Billy, records most prolifically; prior to this album he released a number of singles that aren’t included her. His music remains a pure sound, truer to the spirit of old folk, country, and blues recordings than nearly all other performers in the 21st century. Oldham isn’t afraid of silence, of a dear quiet that makes his music an unsettling affair. “No Match” is a timeless country ballad, supported with sweet harmony vocals. “New Whaling” is stark and foreboding. With Chicago singer Angel Olsen joining him on the lilting and slightly shocking “New Tibet,” Oldham reaches the heights of Master and Everyone. “Black Captain” marinates in a slowness that only Oldham can make compelling and revealing. “Cows” spends most of its five minutes with a hypnotizing stillness before breaking out with electric guitars and Gypsy-like vocal harmonies. The even sparer “There Will Be Spring” is an enticing stroke of melancholy. “Quails and Dumplings,” another star turn for Olsen, picks up the pace with nods toward Celtic folk.
