Bonny Billy is another moniker of troubadour Will Oldham, known for his heartbreaking solo work and his band Palace Music. The More Revery EP finds Oldham with a full band, playing an eclectic mix of six covers held together by the theme of emotional turmoil and inhibited love. The band adds a Neil Young flavor to PJ Harvey's already swaggering "Sweeter Than Anything." Bill Withers' "Same Love That Made Me Laugh" is played like dark, folk-country. "A Dream of the Sea," originally by the Renderers, may be one of Oldham's most uplifting songs, with its jangling shuffle and dancing piano. Bonny Billy's cover of John Holt's "Strange Things" is twisty, slow, and atmospheric with slightly distorted vocals. The band finishes off the EP with the nostalgic, sad twang of "Just to See You Smile," the tune that won Tim McGraw a Grammy. All in all, this EP is a quiet tribute to some great songwriters, with a style that tips its hat to the original and then makes the song all its own.
