With their inscrutable and influential hybrid of wry humor and inarguably deep pop passions, Scotland's BMX Bandits have a specific place in the indie rock canon. Founding member Duglas T. Stewart started BMX back in 1985, and band members have come and gone; lineups have included members of The Vaselines and Teenage Fanclub. Stewart seems to emerge every few years with new ideas, and friends old and new happily climb aboard to help. Bandits in Space is the first BMX Bandits record since 2007's Bee Stings. It's full of "snapshots of love," according to Stewart, "viewed by our hero drifting through time and space." Sustained organ notes, hushed arrangements, and Stewart's voice on tunes like "And It's You" and "The Unforgiven" sound like Yo La Tengo at its quietest. The Bandits' simple, catchy constructs are enhanced by Argentinian dream-pop artist Cineplexx on two tracks, while a collaboration with Japan's Plectrum creates the spacy gem "Still." Fans of Sondre Lerche and Belle & Sebastian should adore Bandits in Space.
