Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's other band is Blackmore's Night, favored by Renaissance Faire attendees and the Medieval Times. Recorded live on Sept. 30, 2011, in the city of York, A Knight in York is strong on concept and musicianship. Blackmore, freed up to play acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, mandola, and hurdy-gurdy, takes plenty of musical chances, though he can't resist adding a fiery hard rock guitar solo to the Zeppelin-like march of the seven-minute "The Circle." His wife and creative partner, Candice Night, handles lead vocals, woodwinds, pennywhistles, and tambourine, while members duly noted as "Earl Grey of Chimay" and "Bard David of Larchmont" add bass, guitar, and keyboards. The folk classic "Barbara Allen" builds to a cathartic roar. "Toast to Tomorrow" includes a parody of Lady Gaga coming out to sing a piece of "Bad Romance" in a masculine mumble. A cover of The Bee Gees' "First of May" ends things on an inspired note.
