[Edit]Black Stalin has been among Trinidad's most popular soca and calypso musicians since 1979, when he won his first National Calypso Monarch crown. He has satisfied audience demands for joyous party material while also producing some incendiary, uncompromising protest material. Rounder collected 11 Stalin gems on this anthology. Such numbers as "Caribbean Unity," "Black Man Music," and "Burn Dem" have a pronounced Afro-Latin bent, showing soca's ties with Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Material done in the late '80s has a faster pace, and Stalin includes synthesized backbeats and contemporary arrangements.
