As the writer of nearly every song on Waylon Jennings' 1973 breakthrough album Honky Tonk Heroes, Billy Joe Shaver was a key architect of Outlaw Country. Yet his great '70s and '80s solo albums didn't rack up many sales. Fortunately, his duo with his budding guitar-hero son Eddy under the name Shaver came along just in time for the alt.country movement, and Billy Joe finally began getting his due. The pair's first album, 1993's Tramp on Your Street, found Eddy contributing plenty of blistering licks to his father's deceptively simple tunes full of down-home poetry and hard-won wisdom. While "Georgia on a Fast Train" and "Old Chunk of Coal" are revved-up remakes of tunes from the elder Shaver's solo outings, the rest of the songs showed that the 54-year-old singer/songwriter still had plenty of power in his pen, from the drunkard's desperate plea for redemption "If I Give My Soul" to the randy roadhouse rocker "The Hottest Thing in Town."
