Tenor saxophonists Tad Shull and Mark Turner had only met the day before Two Tenor Ballads was recorded but immediately found a mutual love of these classic melodies. Like Ben Webster or Coleman Hawkins, Tad Shull's tone is harder while Turner's is light and reminiscent of Warne Marsh. Tried and true standards like "Autumn in New York," "Alone Together," and "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing" are used as duet vehicles while Shull is solo on "I Forgot to Remember" and "You've Changed." Turner gets his solo shot on "Blue in Green" and "Turn out the Stars." The rhythm section comprised of pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Billy Drummond is complimentary to the romantic mood these tenors set on this Criss Cross session cut in December 1994 and released in 2000.
