Bill Gerhardt's second release with his quartet Cotangent has the same personnel as his earlier CD Stained Glass (no surprise as it was recorded during the same sessions), with saxophonist Marc Mommaas, bassist Mike Holstein, drummer Tim Horner, plus trumpeter/fluglehornist Ron Horton as a guest. Though Gerhardt is a fine soloist, he is not one to hog the spotlight like many leaders, often preferring to make the most of his excellent ensemble charts. All of his originals leave a lasting impression, starting with his turbulent bossa nova "Esdrainia," marked by his driving piano and Mommaas' percolating tenor sax, along with his whirlwind post-bop vehicle "Thrive," expertly driven by Horner. The meandering "No Fault at All" is a terrific showcase for Mommaas' crystal-clear soprano sax. Horton plays flugelhorn in the melancholy "Repeat Beginnings" and trumpet in the loping, bluesy "Repair."
