Bill Frisell has played in groups of many sizes; here he leads a trio with an atypical lineup — the veteran guitarist is joined by Eivind Kang on viola and Rudy Royston on drums. Frisell is well known for drawing on bop, pop, rock, folk, blues, country, and other American genres. On 2010’s Beautiful Dreamers, he interprets a wide-ranging set of songs, and performs several originals. He looks all the way back to the mid-19th century for one tune, Stephen Foster’s “Beautiful Dreamer.” This version is certainly an update, but Frisell isn’t afraid to tap into the song’s old-fashioned sweetness without layering on irony. At times, Blind Willie Johnson’s “It’s Nobody’s Fault But Mine” hints at the swagger and flow of Jimi Hendrix minus the heaviness. A swinging and rumbling version of Benny Goodman’s “Benny’s Bugle” finds Frisell spinning out some nice lines, and there’s a rootsy reading of A.P. Carter’s classic “”Keep On the Sunny Side,” a tune associated with the Carter Family. “Who Was That Girl?,” a Frisell original, closes the album. It’s a moody and spacious piece that sounds like late-‘60s Miles Davis with country inflections.
