Peaceful and warring, magical, and mystic: it is little wonder why the orchestral suite of English composer Gustav Holst endures among the most popular pieces of British classical music. Written in 1916, it portrays each of the seven planets known at the time of its completion, including the bombastic war god Mars, joyful Jupiter and Saturn, “The Bringer of Old Age.” The principal melodies of each planet are familiar from their use in film and TV. This spectacular recording from the Berlin Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle brings out the detailed colors of Holst’s orchestrations and revels in the work’s cosmic scale.
