Like his contemporary, Tchaikovsky, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) had a flair for melodic invention and dramatic power. While teaching in New York between 1892 and 1895 Dvořák wrote his homage to America, incorporating African and Native American melodic traditions into the so-called “New World Symphony.” Czech conductor Rafael Kubelik recorded the work many times, but this sublime 1972 performance with the Berlin Philharmonic reveals it as a masterpiece of cross-cultural fusion. The album opens with Dvořák’s bright and cheerful Eighth Symphony, a lesser-known example of his melodic prowess.
