French composer Maurice Ravel was a master of the so-called Impressionist style and he helped define the modern age in classical music. He was also influenced by global traditions, including the music of Asia and the Spanish-speaking world. A heavy Spanish influence can be heard in two of his most famous works, "Boléro" and “Rapsodie Espagnole,” and “La Valse” at once playfully satirises and honours the great waltzes of the Viennese tradition. The legendary French conductor and composer Pierre Boulez is uniquely sensitive to the importance of these groundbreaking works, and he brings a sense of precision, accuracy and restraint to them while at the helm of the mighty Berlin Philharmonic.
