Taking its title from a visionary philosophical work by Friedrich Nietzche, Richard Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra" looked optimistically toward the dawning 20th century, embracing Nietzche's Superman who would transcend human limitations. It was a stroke of genius, then, that Stanley Kubrick chose its spine-tingling opening as theme of his 2001: A Space Odyssey. In a much lighter but equally satisfying vein is Till Eulenspiegel, a musical portrait of a merry prankster. This impeccably performed and recorded program rounds out with the expansive musical narrative Don Juan and the eerily exotic "Dance of the Seven Veils" from the scandalous opera Salome.
