[Edit]The hour could be a little earlier than midnight, but the tempo is what Columbia would have called "torrid" in the mid-'50s. The first side is tame except for "Palladium Mambo" and "Stompin' at the Savoy." (Only four tracks are Belmonte originals or adaptations.) Side two has some surprises. Guitar meets the effect of a wailing trumpet (or something) in "Baby Doll Mambo." Down deep in "Caravan," someone is driving the camels (repeating one syllable, à la Prado's "dilo"); it is probably Belmonte coaching his men. As with most of Cugat's records on Columbia, it is generally pretty sleepy stuff — for dancers — but the conga and guitar on a few tracks are as worthwhile as the great jacket.
