The Beauty Pill finally released its long-awaited debut, three years after Smart Went Crazy broke up. Chad Clark and Abram Goodrich re-formed, adding another vocalist, Joanne Gholl. The EP is more experimental than Smart Went Crazy's sound, but still keeps a sharp D.C. punk edge. Although a short release, Cigarette Girl From the Future samples several different sounds, melding old-style punk and '70s grooves with cello, harp, stand-up bass, and some spacy noises on the title track. The songs are catchy in a downbeat kind of way, and the lyrics can be cynical and ironic, like this line from "The Idiot Heart": "The bad news is there is no hope/The good news is there never was." Featuring the Most Secret Method's Ryan Nelson on drums.
