[Edit]This new collaboration pairs noted drummer Bernard “Pocket” Davis (Najee, Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, and others) with rising star Dani Mendez (who also cowrites and coproduces). The results land right in that sweet spot between smooth jazz, light R&B, and downtempo Latin music. For the latter, check out the samba beats underpinning “Bahia” and “South of the Border.” Mendez anchors more of the smooth sounds with a sensual croon that runs at a hot simmer on the Sade-like title track and the funk pop of “Rock Me.” Only seven songs are included here, but this duo are off to a very strong start.
