Ray Benson and his Western Swing revival band Asleep At The Wheel originally hailed from California, but it didn't take long for them to move to Texas, the former stomping ground of the music's master, Bob Wills. This rollicking tribute to Wills and his band has an impressive lineup of high-power guest stars, ranging from neo-traditionalists Tracy Byrd, Mark Chesnutt, and Lee Ann Womack to alt-country types such Lyle Lovett, and old-timers such as Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. Willie pulls off one of the album's great triumphs with his surprisingly sorrowful version of "Going Away Party," while the Dixie Chicks score a home run with the golden oldie, "Roly Poly," one of Wills's raunchiest blues tunes. Overall, this is a sincere and satisfying tribute, one in which the listener will have as much fun as the musicians who made it.
