[Edit]Rather than cherry-pick one of the many obvious cool songs from any of Love’s ‘60s recordings, Hope Sandoval chose to cover “Five String Serenade” on Mazzy Star’s 1993 LP So Tonight That I Might See – an obscure but beautiful baroque-pop tune from this 1992 album by the same name, wherein Arthur Lee reassembled Love’s Reel to Real era (1974) line-up in a Hollywood studio to record the tune as well as three other numbers. “You’re The Prettiest Song” is only slightly handicapped by the cold early-‘90s production that hasn’t aged well, but the song itself is one of Lee’s most exquisite. It was written with the same West Coast psychedelic-tinged splendor that would rest well in the middle of 1967’s masterwork Forever Changes. The rootsy “Somebody’s Watching You” finds Lee shamelessly stealing the musical skeleton from the Seeds’ 1965 hit “Can’t Seem To Make You Mine” before layering a completely different melody and darker lyrics over the top. Of the six live recordings here, “Seventeen” is the only real standout as it revisits the proto-punk fuel that fired up “7 and 7 Is” from 1967’s Da Capo.
