The Los Angeles–based trio Army Navy play a type of power pop that expands its scope to include elements of folk, ‘70s MOR, and AM radio lite. Songs like “Waiting to Win” and “I’m Curious” capture a somber vibe that results in a subtle, luminous beauty. The obvious talents of singer/guitarist Justin Kennedy, guitarist/singer Louie Schultz, and drummer/singer Douglas Randall are supplemented by their longtime producer Adam Lasus’ ability to make the most of the space between them all. “World’s End” features elements of ‘50s rock ’n’ roll ballads, Roy Orbison’s dramatic intensity, and the sublime harmonies that have earned the trio comparisons to modern pop-rockers like Teenage Fanclub and Sloan. The ‘70s new wave of “Dumb Luck” peels back the arrangement to put Kennedy’s intentions at center stage until it’s time for the song to add harmonies and further guitar shimmering. Besides, who can resist the simple joys of the guitar-fueled “The Mistakes” or the epic explosion behind “Crushed Like the Car”?
