Finally there's a major series of flamenco re-releases. De la Matrona was a giant of the classic cante puro. Almaden's forte was the miners' tradition. La Niña de los Peines was simply one of the greatest 20th-century singers in any style. Montoya was beyond doubt the most influentual flamenco guitarist of the 20th century. Terremoto was a flamboyantly passionate singer of the younger generation. Carmen Amaya, above all a dancer, made a handful of brilliant recordings during the '50s. Caracol was arguably the finest male flamenco singer of the century, and El Agujeta, the only living singer in the series, is the equal of any of them in a pure and almost archaic style. ~ David L.
