Anny Rusk's Strange & Beautiful blends the elements of new age and folk music into one seamless cornucopia of sound and computer-animated and video film visuals that is engineered to be experienced as both an audio collection as well as an interactive experience. Rusk co-wrote all of the 12 compositions, which explore such themes as female sexual empowerment on "Purple God," capital punishment "Gonna Get Mine," sensuality of the spirit on "Slowly," and being true to oneself on "At the End of the Road." Anny Rusk's vocals are reminiscent of Sheryl Crow at times, and when harmonized with her background vocalists, bring the folk-pop arrangements depicting societal ills to life in a contemporary musical setting. Rusk doesn't exactly transcend the new folk genre, but her songs provoke introspection and gain power from their own insightful lyrics and musical accompaniment. No self-indulgent lightheartedness on this CD, but works that are emotionally powerful.
