Toronto native Andrew Rathburn is one of many promising Canadian jazz musicians to emerge on the scene during the '90s, while his recordings have shown a constant search for new territory. Primarily a tenor saxophonist, he also plays soprano sax, clarinet and even a little keyboard for this 2006 small group session with bassist Scott Lee and drummer Jeff Hirschfield. Rathburn and Lee each contributed five compositions, with a pair of arrangements of works by others rounding out the date. Veteran tenor saxophonist George Garzone is a guest on five tracks, including an explosive rendition of Joe Lovano's "Street Talk" and the leader's whirling, Herbie Nichols-like "Scatter Scott." Lee's light-hearted "Drewsie" (honoring reed player Billy Drewes) features Rathburn on clarinet and the mournful "This Year 9/11" adds Garzone (with Rathburn switching to soprano). This remarkable session reveals a musician who is clearly not going to be satisfied with the status quo.
