This is Andrew MacGregor's first CD. He is accompanied by guitar player Marion Schaap. It features pieces by two Japanese composers — Randô Fukuda and great shakuhachi master and composer Kôhachirô Miyata, who is a member of the Ensemble Nipponia — and an arrangement for guitar of the well-known Japanese folk song "Sakura" by Yukihiro Yokô. As well, there are arrangements for shakuhachi and guitar in two pieces by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, including Villa-Lobos' well-known "Bacchianas Brasileiras No. 5" and Frédéric Chopin's "Prelude in E Minor." The guitar arrangements for all the Japanese pieces and Chopin's "Prelude" were done by Marion Schaap, and the shakuhachi arrangements were by Andrew MacGregor. This CD is enchanting and shows the great talent of both musicians — Schaap rendering Japanese koto parts on guitar and MacGregor performing so elegantly Villa-Lobos' and Chopin's pieces on shakuhachi. A treat. ~ Bruno Deschênes, Rovi
