Canada’s Alvvays were a buzz band before they’d even gotten a complete album out. This self-titled debut has the good fortune of being produced by indie rocker Chad VanGaalen and mixed by Holy F***’s Graham Walsh and John Agnello, who’s worked with everyone from Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. to Kurt Vile, Drive-By Truckers, and Son Volt. Naturally, the sound quality here is improved over the records from the twee C86 movement that influenced the band. Songs like “Adult Diversion” and “Archie, Marry Me” are taken to new places with the sonic depth here. Led by singer/guitarist Molly Rankin, Alvvays manage gorgeous melodies brought to life by several layers of watery guitars, with a touch of synth (it provides the steady atmosphere for “Party Police”) occasionally popping up among the harmonies. The songwriting, however, is what guides the group over the proverbial hump. “Next of Kin,” the lower-key “Dives,” and “Atop a Cake” fulfill the promise of the shameless hooky pop that starts the album.
