Drummer Alphonse Mouzon has played jazz fusion with Weather Report, rock with Eric Clapton, and soul with Stevie Wonder, and he's led his own bands. This was recorded and released by the MPL imprint in 1979 (and here reissued digitally for the first time with fresh mastering job). Kitsch doesn’t get much better than the disco versions of The Beatles’ “All My Loving” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Perhaps in reference this album's German origin, “Disco Jungle” is more like a minimalist tune by Kraftwerk and actually has the requisite hypnotic feel. Elsewhere, the title track sounds like a disco version of Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” Mouzon closes with his version of Hendrix’s “Manic Depression,” which finds him finally cutting loose on drums for the opening and then charging through the song with the band cooking alongside him. This will certainly be one for lovers of obscure disco and warped covers.
