Since Alex Campbell is justly known as one of the most prominent singers from the early-'60s folk revival who was associated with Scottish songs, it comes as no surprise that this LP is full of them. The title Best Loved Songs of Bonnie Scotland alone announces that fact. If approached from a more modern perspective this holds no shocks in store, it's a pretty good early-'60s traditional folk album, and superior to his LP of the following year, Folk Session. The arrangements are more nicely varied than they are on many records of this type and era, sometimes featuring only acoustic guitar behind Campbell's vocals, but also using some musicians on banjo and mandolin. Some of the songs ("The Skye Boat Song," "The Bluebells of Scotland," "The Dundee Weaver") are more familiar than others, and Campbell's singing is rousing and engaging without slipping into the overly melodramatic.
